![]() We construct a dredge by connecting one end of an airtight suction pipe to the pump inlet and immersing the other end of the pipe beneath the surface of water. On a hullpump dredge, the running dredge pump (an enclosed space) reduces the pressure in its inlet port in an effort to cause liquid to flow into the impeller eye. What is vacuum? The technical explanation is that vacuum is the pressure in any enclosed space on earth that is less than atmospheric pressure. There is no other way to determine what is going on in the dredge suction pipe. Vacuum gauges are an absolute necessity on sand and gravel hydraulic dredges.
